President William Samoei Ruto has outlined an ambitious development agenda for Wajir County, marking the conclusion of the national roll-out of the NYOTA Programme’s Business Start-Up Capital component with a KSh63 million disbursement to 2,520 beneficiaries in the county.
The President said the first phase of the programme has so far benefited 121,800 young entrepreneurs across the country, with a total of KSh2.5 billion disbursed to support business start-ups and expansion.
“In the coming weeks, each beneficiary will receive an additional KSh25,000, bringing the total allocation to KSh50,000 for every young entrepreneur under the programme,” President Ruto said.
Beyond the financial grants, the Head of State noted that beneficiaries will undergo structured mentorship for six months and will subsequently be linked to affordable credit facilities to ensure sustainability and long-term growth of their enterprises.
“This is not just about giving out money. We are walking with our young people through mentorship and access to credit so that their businesses can grow and create jobs,” he added.
Drought Mitigation Efforts
At the same time, President Ruto announced that the government has released more than KSh10 billion over the past three months to mitigate the effects of drought nationwide.
“We will continue to scale up our interventions to safeguard lives, protect livelihoods and preserve livestock in the most affected regions,” he said.
Historic Madaraka Day for Wajir
In a historic move for the Northern region, Wajir County will host this year’s Madaraka Day celebrations on June 1, 2026 — the first time a national holiday will be marked in the former Northern Frontier District.
To facilitate the event and promote sports development, the government is constructing a modern 10,000-seater stadium in Wajir Town at a cost of KSh900 million.
“The construction of the Wajir Stadium is part of our commitment to balanced national development and ensuring that no region is left behind,” the President said.
Infrastructure and Connectivity
President Ruto also highlighted ongoing and planned infrastructure projects in the county, including the tarmacking of roads in Eldas, Griftu, Hadado, Habaswein and Tarbaj towns.
He further cited the construction of the Samatar–Wajir main road and the official opening of the new public terminal at Wajir Airport as key milestones aimed at boosting connectivity and economic growth.
On the persistent power outages in the region, the President assured residents that the government has put in place both short-term and long-term solutions to stabilize electricity supply.
“This is a history in the making for Wajir County,” he said, reiterating the government’s commitment to transforming Northern Kenya through strategic investment in infrastructure, youth empowerment and drought resilience initiatives.
