The announcement was made during the 63rd Madaraka Day celebrations held in Wajir County, where President Ruto affirmed the government's commitment to recognising national heroes whose contributions have left a lasting impact on Kenya's development. Ahmed Khalif was appointed Minister for Labour in January 2003 by former President Mwai Kibaki. However, his tenure was tragically cut short when he lost his life in a plane crash on January 24, 2003, while returning from a political event in Busia attended by then Vice-President Moody Awori.
