Ahmed Khalif, the late Wajir West Member of Parliament and former Minister for Labour, is set to receive one of the highest honours in his home county after President William Ruto announced that the newly constructed Wajir Stadium will be named after him.
The announcement was made during the 63rd Madaraka Day celebrations held in Wajir County, where President Ruto affirmed the government's commitment to recognising national heroes whose contributions have left a lasting impact on Kenya's development.
Ahmed Khalif was appointed Minister for Labour in January 2003 by former President Mwai Kibaki. However, his tenure was tragically cut short when he lost his life in a plane crash on January 24, 2003, while returning from a political event in Busia attended by then Vice-President Moody Awori.
In a move widely welcomed by leaders and residents, President Ruto said naming the stadium after Khalif would serve as a lasting tribute to a leader whose service and dedication continue to inspire generations.
"I want to assure you that this stadium, which we have built in a short time, will be completed to international standards," President Ruto said.
"And after completing this stadium, just as you requested and I agree with you 100 percent, this facility will be called Ahmed Khalif Wajir Stadium."
The Head of State further pledged to oversee the completion of the facility to international standards, transforming it into a premier sporting and social centre for Northern Kenya.
The proposal to name the stadium after the late statesman was first presented by Wajir Governor Ahmed Abdullahi, who described Khalif as a distinguished leader whose contributions deserved permanent recognition.
"It will be a befitting tribute for the people of Wajir to name this magnificent facility the Honourable Ahmed Khalif Stadium," Governor Abdullahi said.
The announcement was received with applause from thousands of residents and leaders who attended the national celebrations, with many describing it as a long-overdue recognition of one of Wajir's most respected political figures.
Beyond honouring Ahmed Khalif's legacy, the decision reflects the government's broader efforts to address historical marginalisation in Northern Kenya and ensure the region receives equitable development, recognition, and investment.
For many residents, the naming of the stadium stands as a powerful symbol of remembrance, celebrating a leader whose public service was cut short but whose influence continues to shape the political and social landscape of Wajir County.
