With less than two years remaining before the 2027 General Election, political temperatures in Wajir West are steadily rising following the official endorsement of Prof. Mohamed Yussuf Elmi, popularly known as “Nyanurey,” by the influential Hassan Mohamud sub-clan of the larger Rerow Mohamud community.
The highly attended endorsement ceremony, marked by pomp, colour and jubilation, brought together respected elders, religious leaders, women, youth groups and community stakeholders from across the region. The gathering followed months of consultations, family retreats and extensive deliberations within the community before unanimously settling on Prof. Elmi as their preferred candidate for the Wajir West parliamentary seat in 2027.
Speakers at the event described Prof. Elmi as a seasoned leader with vast experience, strong academic credentials and a deep understanding of the region’s development challenges.
“The community has made its decision after long discussions and careful consideration. Prof. Elmi is the right man to lead Wajir West,” said Siyad Fotle during the gathering.
He added that Prof. Elmi’s years of perseverance in politics, coupled with his professional achievements and commitment to education, make him the most suitable candidate to represent the constituency in Parliament.
“Our community has supported many leaders to occupy senior political positions over the years. We believe it is now our turn to take up the mantle of leadership,” another elder declared amid applause from supporters.
An elder Kassim also threw his weight behind the endorsement, praising Prof. Elmi’s leadership qualities, education and administrative experience.
“Mohamed Elmi deserves an opportunity to serve the people of Wajir West. He has the knowledge, the skills and the vision needed to transform this constituency,” the elder stated.
Several other speakers echoed similar sentiments, describing Prof. Elmi as a unifying figure capable of steering the constituency towards meaningful development and inclusivity.
In his acceptance speech, Prof. Mohamed Yussuf Elmi thanked the Hassan Mohamud community for the trust and confidence they had placed in him, terming the endorsement as a major milestone in his political journey.
“The time has come for us to move together towards a new chapter of leadership and development. I am ready to serve the people of Wajir West with dedication, integrity and experience,” Prof. Elmi said.
He further pledged to champion infrastructure, education, healthcare and economic empowerment if elected, while calling upon other communities within Wajir West to rally behind his candidature for the sake of unity and progress.
“I will work tirelessly to bring massive development to our region and ensure that every community benefits equally,” he added.
Prof. Elmi is no stranger to the political scene in Wajir County. Over the years, he has unsuccessfully contested for the Wajir West parliamentary seat on several occasions. In the 2022 General Election, he vied as a deputy gubernatorial candidate under the United Democratic Alliance ticket.
Beyond politics, Prof. Elmi is widely recognised as the founder of Nuria College, an institution that has played a significant role in expanding access to higher education for students from northern Kenya. The college has offered opportunities to many families unable to afford university education in major urban centres across the country.
As political alignments continue to take shape ahead of the 2027 polls, Wajir West is rapidly emerging as one of the most closely watched battlegrounds in northern Kenya, with several aspirants expected to enter the race in the coming months.
