Garissa County — Health authorities in Garissa have intensified public health awareness campaigns following the confirmation of a cholera case involving a Year-old child from Dekaburey village in Iftin Ward.
According to officials at Garissa County Teaching and Referral Hospital, the child developed symptoms on March 22 and was later diagnosed with cholera on March 25 at Iftin Sub-County Hospital. The patient is currently receiving treatment and remains in stable condition.
Hospital authorities said the confirmation of the case has prompted an urgent response aimed at preventing further spread of the disease across the county.
“We have intensified community sensitisation campaigns and strengthened our response mechanisms to ensure early detection, treatment, and containment,” said hospital spokesperson Yunis Dekow in a statement released on Monday.
Health teams have since launched awareness initiatives across affected communities, educating residents on hygiene practices, safe water use, sanitation, and early identification of symptoms associated with cholera.
Residents have been urged to remain vigilant and seek immediate medical attention if they experience symptoms such as severe watery diarrhoea, vomiting, dehydration, fatigue, or leg cramps.
“We are calling on members of the public to observe strict hygiene standards, including washing hands regularly with soap, drinking boiled or treated water, and ensuring food is thoroughly cooked,” Dekow added. “Avoid raw or improperly prepared foods and maintain clean surroundings to reduce the risk of infection.”
County health officials further assured the public that the situation remains under control. Surveillance systems, contact tracing, and case management measures have been activated to monitor and contain any potential spread.
Cholera is a waterborne disease commonly associated with contaminated food or drinking water, particularly in areas with limited sanitation. Health authorities say community cooperation will be key in preventing additional infections.
Garissa health officials continue to monitor the situation closely while urging residents to adhere to public health guidelines to safeguard their communities.
