Residents of Mandera County are set to benefit from a Ramadan support initiative targeting vulnerable households following the launch of a cash transfer programme aimed at easing the burden of the holy month.
The programme, spearheaded by Mandera County Women Representative Hon. Umul Kheir Kassim, was officially unveiled in Elwak Town under the National Government Affirmative Action Fund (NGAAF).
The initiative will provide direct financial assistance to about 1,200 vulnerable households across the county to help families meet essential needs and prepare Iftar meals during Ramadan.
The launch was conducted through representatives from the Women Representative’s office and is complemented by additional personal initiatives aimed at strengthening the programme’s reach and impact.
Speaking during the launch, Hon. Kassim said the intervention comes at a critical time when many families are still recovering from the devastating effects of drought and rising economic pressures.
“This timely social protection intervention will reach approximately 1,200 vulnerable households across Mandera County, providing much-needed relief and support to families facing economic hardship,” she said.
She noted that the initiative is designed to cushion struggling families by providing direct financial support to help them meet their basic needs with dignity during the holy month of Ramadan.
“Coming during the holy month of Ramadan and in the wake of the devastating effects of drought, this programme is intended to support vulnerable families and help them care for their households with dignity,” Hon. Kassim added.
Local leaders who attended the launch welcomed the programme, describing it as a timely and meaningful intervention for families grappling with the high cost of living. They commended the Women Representative for prioritizing humanitarian support during the sacred period.
The programme, implemented under the theme “Mama Kheir na Kazi,” forms part of NGAAF’s broader efforts to promote social welfare and community empowerment across Mandera County.
Hon. Kassim emphasized that the initiative reflects her continued commitment to uplifting vulnerable populations and promoting inclusive socio-economic development in the region.
“By placing resources directly into the hands of those most in need, we are strengthening household resilience and reminding ourselves that caring for the most vulnerable members of our society is a shared responsibility,” she said.
Beneficiary households are expected to receive cash transfers to enable them to purchase food and other essential items during the fasting period, bringing relief to families and allowing them to observe Ramadan in the spirit of compassion and generosity.
