Senior national government officials today toured ongoing preparations in Wajir ahead of this year’s Madaraka Day celebrations, which will be hosted in the county for the first time.
The inspection team, led by Ps Raymond Omollo, visited the site of the 10,000-seater Wajir Stadium currently undergoing a major upgrade to accommodate the national event. He was accompanied by Patrick Mariru and Teresia Mbaika, as part of the National Celebrations Steering Committee.
During the tour, the delegation assessed progress on the stadium works as well as key supporting infrastructure expected to facilitate the celebrations.
These include the improvement of access roads, upgrades to airport facilities, installation of enhanced security systems and development of public amenities to ensure smooth movement, safety and comfort for both residents and visitors.
Speaking during the visit, Dr. Omollo said the government remains committed to ensuring that the venue and all related infrastructure are ready ahead of the national celebrations.
“The decision by the government to rotate national celebrations across different counties is deliberate. It promotes inclusive growth, strengthens national cohesion and stimulates local economies while accelerating infrastructure development,” he said.
Omollo added that hosting such events in different regions ensures that communities across the country share in the pride and opportunity associated with moments of national significance.
Also present during the inspection was Ahmed Muhumed Abdi alongside senior officials from both the national and county governments.
Deputy Governor Ahmed Muhumed welcomed the government’s decision to host the celebrations in Wajir, saying the move would bring long-term benefits to the region.
“We appreciate the national government, under the leadership of William Ruto, for prioritising development in our region. The ongoing projects will not only support the Madaraka Day celebrations but will also leave lasting infrastructure that will benefit the people of Wajir for years to come,” he said.
This year’s Madaraka Day celebrations are expected to place Wajir County in the national spotlight, with the ongoing infrastructure upgrades anticipated to boost local business activity and improve public facilities across the county.
