HEAVY RAINFALL ALERT: Met Department Issues Nationwide Advisory as Downpours Intensify

By Ahmed Salat Ali

The Kenya Meteorological Department has issued a heavy rainfall advisory warning of intensified downpours across several parts of the country over the coming days.

In a statement released on 21st April 2026 at 3:00 p.m., the department indicated that the advisory will remain in effect from 22nd April at 3:00 a.m. until 27th April 2026 at 9:00 a.m. The rainfall is expected to range from moderate to heavy intensity, with a moderate probability of occurrence estimated between 33 and 66 per cent.

According to the advisory, rainfall is likely to intensify during this period, with some areas—particularly along the Coast and parts of the Northeastern and Southeastern lowlands—expected to record more than 20mm within 24 hours. The rains may also be accompanied by strong winds exceeding 25 knots (12.5 m/s).

Along coastal regions, sea waves are projected to rise above two metres, posing additional risks to maritime activities.

Counties identified as high-risk areas include Kwale, Mombasa, Kilifi, Tana River, Lamu, and Garissa, as well as parts of Wajir, Mandera, Taita-Taveta, Kitui, and Makueni.

Residents in the affected areas have been urged to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions. Authorities warn of potential flooding, flash floods, and reduced visibility.

Notably, flooding may also occur in downstream areas even where rainfall is not particularly heavy.

Members of the public are advised to avoid walking or driving through moving water or across flooded areas.

They are further cautioned against sheltering under trees or near metallic structures, such as grilled windows, due to the risk of lightning strikes.

Those engaging in maritime activities have also been urged to exercise extreme caution.

The department has assured the public that updates will be issued promptly should there be any changes to the forecast.

The advisory has been circulated to key government offices and agencies, including the Presidency, relevant ministries, disaster management authorities, and county governments, to enhance preparedness and response measures.
