Opposition Intensifies Ukambani Push with Two-Day Kitui Tour

By Ahmed Salat Ali | Political Affairs, AARAN TV KE

The opposition coalition under the United Alternative Government (UAG) has launched a two-day political tour of Kitui County, in a calculated move to consolidate support in the Ukambani region ahead of the 2027 General Election.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, April 22, 2026, Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) leader Rigathi Gachagua announced that the tour—dubbed the “Kitui County Tour”—will run from April 22 to 23, covering key constituencies across the county.

On the first day, the leaders are scheduled to traverse Kitui West, Mwingi West, and Mwingi Central constituencies. The second day’s itinerary includes Kitui Central, Kitui East, Kitui Rural, and Kitui South.

The visit forms part of a broader series of political engagements in what is widely regarded as the political stronghold of Kalonzo Musyoka. Analysts view the move as a strategic effort to solidify regional backing and build momentum toward the next general election.

The Kitui tour follows a recent rally in Kikuyu Township, where Gachagua alleged attempts by certain leaders to block opposition gatherings. He dismissed the claims, asserting that the Constitution guarantees the right to peaceful assembly and association.

“Kikuyu is governed by the Constitution of Kenya. No one has the authority to deny citizens their democratic rights,” Gachagua stated.

During the same visit, Gachagua accused Kikuyu Member of Parliament Kimani Ichung’wah of orchestrating the disruption of his rally using teargas—an allegation he described as a betrayal of the electorate.

“These are leaders elected by the people, yet they turn against them. It is unacceptable to deploy police and teargas on the very citizens who entrusted you with leadership,” he said.

He further alleged that Ichung’wah was acting in concert with President William Ruto to frustrate opposition activities in the region.

The UAG coalition, led by Fred Matiang’i, Gachagua, Kalonzo Musyoka, and Eugene Wamalwa, has in recent weeks intensified its grassroots mobilisation. The team has held rallies across several regions, including Kisii County, where meetings took place in Ekerenyo Grounds, Kisii Stadium, Keumbu, Ogembo, Kenyenya, Nyamache, and Masimba.

In addition, the coalition recently staged a public engagement forum in Heshima, Bahati Constituency, in Nakuru County, as part of its broader nationwide campaign strategy aimed at expanding influence in Rift Valley counties.

Political observers note that the sustained tours signal an early and aggressive campaign posture by the opposition, as alliances begin to take shape well ahead of the 2027 polls.
