National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula has issued a stern warning to the country’s 47 governors, insisting they must submit fully to parliamentary oversight and account for every shilling of public funds entrusted to them.
Speaking during a youth empowerment programme in Mabera, Kuria West Constituency in Migori County, the Speaker reaffirmed Parliament’s unwavering commitment to its constitutional mandate of scrutinising public expenditure.
“For whom much is given, much more is expected,” Wetang’ula declared. “Governors cannot receive billions in taxpayers’ money and then turn defiant or evasive when called upon to explain how those funds have been utilised.”
He cautioned that any governor who ignores summons to appear before parliamentary committees will face legal consequences. In a decisive move, Wetang’ula revealed that he has tasked Rarieda MP Otiende Amollo with spearheading the development of legislation to introduce criminal sanctions against non-compliant county chiefs.
“Governors are not owners of public funds; they are trustees,” he emphasised. “And when they fall short, they must come before Parliament and answer.”
On the rising cost of living, the Speaker commended Members of Parliament for swiftly approving amendments aimed at reducing Value Added Tax (VAT) on fuel, following a request by President William Ruto. He noted that fuel prices have a direct impact on all sectors of the economy, and the tax reduction was necessary to ease the burden on ordinary Kenyans.
“Fuel affects every aspect of our economy. Lowering the tax was a necessary step to cushion wananchi,” he said.
Wetang’ula also called on Kenyans to uphold national unity and reject divisive ethnic politics, urging citizens to treat one another with dignity and mutual respect.
“As a nation, we are one people. We must rise above ethnic divisions and work together for the common good,” he stated.
Addressing the youth, the Speaker encouraged beneficiaries of empowerment programmes to utilise the funds responsibly by investing in productive ventures and building sustainable businesses.
“To the youth, my message is simple: use these opportunities wisely. Invest in your future and avoid wasting resources meant to uplift your lives,” he advised.
