As the country edges closer to the next General Election, a fresh appeal has been made to former President Uhuru Kenyatta to withdraw from active political engagement and embrace his role as a unifying national figure.
Speaking to residents at Lunyofu Primary School in Budalang’i, the leader acknowledged Mr Kenyatta’s enduring contribution to the nation but cautioned that his recent public remarks risk fuelling division at a time when unity remains paramount.
“We hold the former President in high regard for his service to this Republic. However, at this critical juncture, the country needs voices that unite rather than divide,” he said.
He noted that Kenya stands at a delicate moment, where cohesion, stability, and national harmony are essential as the electoral period approaches.
Drawing parallels with past leaders, he pointed to the examples set by the late Daniel arap Moi and the late Mwai Kibaki, who, upon leaving office, maintained a dignified distance from active politics while serving as symbols of national unity.
“Former Heads of State carry immense influence even in retirement. It is only fitting that they use that stature to foster peace and cohesion across the country,” he added.
The sentiments were echoed by several leaders present, led by Senate Majority Leader Aaron Cheruiyot, who also urged Mr Kenyatta to uphold the long-standing tradition of statesmanship associated with retired presidents.
Mr Cheruiyot emphasized that the expectations placed on former national leaders go beyond partisan interests. “There is a higher calling that comes with having served at the highest office. That responsibility must now be reflected in actions that promote unity and national stability,” he said.
The calls come amid heightened political activity across the country, with leaders increasingly weighing in on the tone and direction of national discourse ahead of the polls.
