President William Ruto on Saturday toured Griftu and Habaswein towns in Wajir County, where he inspected ongoing infrastructure projects and reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to ending decades of marginalisation in Northern Kenya through equitable development.
Speaking during public engagements in the two towns ahead of this year's Madaraka Day celebrations, President Ruto said the Government is determined to ensure that all regions of the country benefit fairly from national development programmes.
“We are ending decades of marginalisation by implementing development projects fairly across Kenya. Our goal is to build a nation that every Kenyan is proud to call home,” said the President.
The Head of State highlighted key reforms undertaken by his administration, including the abolition of the discriminatory extra vetting process that for years denied many residents of Northern Kenya access to National Identity Cards.
According to the President, the move has opened doors for thousands of citizens to access government services, education opportunities, employment, and other essential services without discrimination.
To strengthen the education sector in the region, President Ruto said the Government introduced an affirmative action programme that recruits 100 teachers in every constituency across Northern Kenya.
“This initiative will increase the number of local teachers and ensure uninterrupted learning in our schools,” he noted.
Griftu Road Project
While in Griftu Town, Wajir West Constituency, the President inspected the ongoing tarmacking of roads being upgraded at a cost of KSh1 billion. He said the project is expected to improve transport, stimulate local businesses, and enhance connectivity within the town.
President Ruto also addressed residents of Griftu, describing the upcoming Madaraka Day celebrations as a historic moment for Wajir County and the entire Northern Kenya region.
“This year's Madaraka Day celebrations are historic because, for the first time, they are being held in Wajir County and in Northern Kenya,” he said.
Powering Habaswein's Growth
In Habaswein Town, Wajir South Constituency, the President commissioned the Habaswein Solar PV-BESS-Diesel Hybrid Power Plant, a KSh639 million investment designed to provide reliable, affordable, and sustainable electricity to more than 8,565 households.
He said the project will transform livelihoods, support businesses, and create new economic opportunities for residents.
The President further revealed that under the Government’s affirmative action programme for Northern Kenya, KSh8.4 billion is being invested to connect more than 53,300 households to electricity.
“We are committed to inclusive development and ensuring that no part of our country is left behind,” he said.
President Ruto also inspected the progress of the upgrading of 7.5 kilometres of roads within Habaswein Town, a KSh557 million project expected to improve mobility, facilitate trade, and enhance access to essential services.
The President's tour underscored the Government's broader agenda of expanding infrastructure, improving public services, and accelerating economic transformation across Northern Kenya, a region that has historically lagged behind in development.
