Wajir West political landscape heats up as Rerow Mahamud elders, professionals, religious leaders, youth and women agree on a date for the community’s decisive parliamentary selection process.

The much-anticipated Rerow Mahamud General meeting has finally taken place, setting the stage for a decisive political process aimed at identifying a sole parliamentary candidate to represent the community in the Wajir West constituency race.

Held at the Wajir Red Cross Hall on Thursday, September 17, the meeting brought together a broad spectrum of the Rerow Mahamud community, including elders, religious leaders, professionals, youth, women and other opinion shapers.

The gathering, which began at approximately 9:30 a.m. and concluded at around 12:40 p.m., was convened to deliberate on the way forward for the community’s political representation, following the Quran and reconciliation retreat held in Hadado in July.

At the centre of the deliberations was a critical question: When, where and through what mechanism should Rerow Mahamud select its sole candidate for the Wajir West parliamentary seat?

Heated debate over the selection timeline

The meeting featured extensive discussions, competing views and spirited exchanges as participants sought to establish a credible, transparent and democratic framework for the selection process.

Some speakers proposed December, while others argued for an earlier date, including October 2026 or February 2027. The divergent positions reflected the weight of the decision facing the community as it seeks to consolidate its political voice ahead of the 2027 General Election.

Elders and opinion leaders were given an opportunity to articulate their views, with the chairperson facilitating the proceedings and ensuring that participants from different sections of the community were heard.

The discussions focused on the timing of the selection, the mechanism to be adopted, the composition of delegates and the need to ensure that the eventual process commands legitimacy across the Rerow Mahmoud community.

After hours of deliberation, the meeting reached a significant resolution.

December 17, 2026, set for the grand selection convention

The Rerow Mahamud community agreed to hold its final grand parliamentary candidate selection convention on December 17, 2026, in Wajir.

The exercise is expected to be conducted through a delegates’ system, with each of the community’s 14 sub-clans expected to participate in selecting representatives.

However, the exact number of delegates, the detailed voting formula and other logistical arrangements remain subject to further deliberations by the committee tasked with spearheading the process.

Before the grand convention, prospective candidates will be expected to engage with the committee to explain their positions and present themselves for consideration under the agreed framework.

The committee and community elders are expected to work on the outstanding details, including the delegate composition, eligibility criteria and the modalities of the final vote.

Political maturity and the Wajir West contest

Speaking to Aaran Tv Ke after the meeting, one of the elders, Mohamed, described the gathering as a reflection of the political evolution of the Rerow Mahamud community.

He said the willingness of members to debate openly and pursue a structured selection process demonstrated a growing appreciation of democratic participation.

“This shows how the Rerow Mahamud community has matured politically over the last decades. Giving people an opportunity to speak and participate in the process is a sign of political maturity,” Mohamed said

He further observed that the Wajir West parliamentary contest is shaping up to be a competitive political battle, with more than five candidates reportedly eyeing the seat.

The constituency’s political landscape is expected to attract heightened attention in the coming months, with different communities and political formations positioning themselves ahead of the 2027 elections.

A community seeking a unified political voice

For some participants who spoke anonymously to Aaran Tv Ke after the meeting, the gathering was a necessary step towards building consensus within Rerow Mahamud 

They described the discussions as a democratic platform that allowed members to express their views, challenge proposals and contribute to the direction of the community’s political future.

The December 17 convention is now expected to serve as the defining moment in the community’s efforts to settle on a sole parliamentary candidate.

Beyond the parliamentary contest, Rerow Mahamud members are also pursuing political interests in other elective positions, including the gubernatorial race, the Women Representative position and various Members of County Assembly seats.

The community’s political negotiations are therefore not limited to the Wajir West parliamentary seat but form part of a wider effort to secure meaningful representation in Wajir County politics.

The road to December 17

With the date now agreed upon, attention shifts to the committee and the elders, who are expected to refine the selection framework and oversee the preparations for the grand convention.

The coming months will be crucial as the community seeks to transform today’s deliberations into a cohesive political strategy.
