MANTAN COMMUNITY CROWNS UGAS MOHAMED ALI ‘TUKO KAZI’ AS NEW DEGODIA SULTAN

The Mantan community of Mandera, drawn from the wider Degodia community, has formally elected and coronated Ugas Mohamed Ali, popularly known as Tuko Kazi, as its traditional leader.

The coronation marks a significant moment in the cultural and traditional affairs of the Degodia community, with Ugas Mohamed Ali expected to join the wider Degodia Sultanate and play a role in preserving the community’s heritage, unity and traditional values.

Speaking during the colourful ceremony, elders and community leaders hailed the new Ugas as a unifying figure entrusted with the responsibility of safeguarding the dignity, traditions and interests of the Mantan community.

“This is not merely a coronation; it is a solemn responsibility. Ugas Mohamed Ali has been entrusted with the honour of representing our people, protecting our traditions and strengthening unity within the wider Degodia community,” one elder said.

The ceremony brought together elders, community representatives, religious leaders, professionals, women and youth, who witnessed the formal installation of the new Ugas.

His coronation is expected to strengthen the traditional leadership structure among the Degodia and provide a platform for greater consultation, cultural preservation and community cohesion.

As Ugas Mohamed Ali assumes his new traditional responsibilities, expectations are high that his leadership will be guided by wisdom, inclusivity and a commitment to unity.

The Mantan community has spoken — and Ugas Mohamed Ali ‘Tuko Kazi’ now takes his place among the traditional leaders of the wider Degodia Sultanate.

Speaking after the he colourful ceremony, Ugas Mohamed Ali thanked the elders and the Mantan community and larger Degodia conmmunity for entrusting him with the traditional leadership and pledged to serve with humility, wisdom and dedication.

“I accept this responsibility with humility and gratitude. The honour bestowed upon me today is not a personal achievement; it is a trust from our elders and the entire Mantan community. I will strive to uphold our traditions, protect our cultural heritage and work for the unity and dignity of our people.”

He said his leadership would be anchored on consultation, respect for elders and strengthening unity among the wider Degodia community.

“Our strength lies in our unity. I will work with our elders, religious leaders, professionals, women and youth to ensure that our traditions remain strong while our community continues to move forward. This responsibility belongs to all of us, and I will always remain open to advice and guidance.”

Ugas Mohamed Ali further pledged to use his position to promote peace, reconciliation and cooperation among the Degodia people.

“Leadership is a responsibility, not a privilege. I will do my best to be a voice for peace, unity and understanding. I ask our people to remain united, respect one another and preserve the values that have held our community together for generations.”

As Ugas Mohamed Ali assumes his new traditional responsibilities, he is expected to take his place among the wider Degodia Sultanate and contribute to the preservation of the community’s customs, identity and unity.
