Garissa School for the Deaf is set to receive a major infrastructure boost following the launch of a KSh12.7 million project aimed at improving learning facilities, access to clean water, sanitation and digital education for learners with hearing impairments.
The project, implemented by Airtel Money Kenya through the Airtel Africa Foundation in partnership with ChildFund Kenya, seeks to create a more inclusive and supportive learning environment for learners with special needs.
Under the Building Brighter Futures initiative, the school will receive four new classrooms to accommodate its growing student population, alongside an ICT centre designed to equip learners with digital skills and expand their access to educational opportunities.
The project will also improve water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) facilities through the construction of modern ablution blocks with separate toilets and bathrooms for boys and girls, an extension of the water pipeline and the installation of an elevated water tank with a storage capacity of 20,000 litres.
Additional facilities will include a 20-point handwashing station and a separate two-door sanitation block for teachers, with the aim of promoting hygiene and improving conditions across the school.
Speaking during the launch, Airtel Money Kenya Acting Managing Director Bonke Michael said the investment was intended to provide learners with an environment where they could study, develop their abilities and pursue their ambitions.
“Our commitment with this project goes beyond infrastructure; it is about creating a safe, inclusive and supportive learning environment where every child has the opportunity to learn, grow and pursue their dreams,” said Michael.
He added that every child deserved access to quality education and the necessary tools to realise their full potential.
Initiative Targets More Than 2,000 Learners
The Garissa project forms part of a wider KSh62 million investment under the Building Brighter Futures initiative, which is expected to benefit more than 2,000 learners across four public schools in Baringo, Garissa and Wajir counties.
The programme began in Baringo County, where KSh37 million was allocated to improve learning and WASH infrastructure at Marigat Integrated Day and Boarding Primary School and Marigat Special School for the Visually Impaired.
The expansion of the initiative to Garissa underscores the importance of investing in school infrastructure that addresses the specific needs of learners with disabilities while improving access to essential services.
Fatuma Omar, a Curriculum Support Officer for Special Needs Education in Garissa County, said a conducive learning environment was critical to effective curriculum delivery and the development of every learner.
“This is about creating opportunities, promoting inclusion and investing in the future of our learners,” Omar said.
She noted that appropriate learning facilities were essential in ensuring that learners with special needs could participate in education and develop their abilities to the fullest.
Focus on Inclusive Education
The partnership between Airtel Money Kenya, the Airtel Africa Foundation and ChildFund Kenya reflects a shared commitment to strengthening inclusive education through investments in essential school infrastructure.
For Garissa School for the Deaf, the planned improvements are expected to address some of the challenges associated with inadequate classroom space, limited access to digital learning and the need for reliable water and sanitation facilities.
Beyond the construction works, the initiative seeks to promote a school environment where learners with disabilities can access educational opportunities, build confidence and acquire skills necessary for their future.
The project also highlights the role of partnerships between the private sector and development organisations in supporting public education, particularly for learners who require specialised facilities and additional support.
As the project takes shape, its impact will ultimately be measured by the quality of the facilities delivered and the difference they make in the daily learning experiences of children at Garissa School for the Deaf.
